Green building: sustainable construction and certification schemes

Green building, also known as sustainable construction, is now one of the most advanced and environmentally conscious approaches to the design and construction of buildings, aimed at optimising environmental and energy performance, as well as improving the well-being of the people who live in them.

Sisti Engineering has adopted these principles in a structured manner, obtaining internationally recognised certifications that attest to the compliance of its products with the highest standards in green building.

What is Greenbuilding?

Green building stems from the need to measure, using agreed and transparent methodologies, the environmental impact of buildings throughout their entire life cycle. Green building certification schemes assess a wide range of parameters: energy efficiency, water management, indoor air quality, choice of materials, waste management, sustainable transport and site ecology.

Certified quality

The main certification schemes

BREEAM

The first certification system in the history of green building is the BREEAM® (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), developed in 1990 by the UK’s Building Research Establishment. It uses internationally recognised assessment methods, based on standardised parameters that analyse the environmental and energy performance of the building as a whole.

LEED

The LEED® (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) standard was introduced by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) with the aim of promoting the principles of sustainable construction worldwide. The system comprises mandatory prerequisites and optional credits, divided into thematic categories. The overall score determines the certification level achieved by the building: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum. The credits cover key areas such as energy, water, indoor environmental quality, materials, waste and ecology.

WELL Building Standard

Introduced in 2014 by the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI), the WELL Building Standard® represents the latest, people-centred development in the green building sector. This protocol focuses exclusively on the design and construction aspects related to the health and wellbeing of the building’s occupants, placing particular emphasis on indoor air quality, lighting, acoustic and thermal comfort, nutrition and mental health.

Engineering and service at the heart of safety

Sisti Engineering has achieved LEED® and WELL Building Standard® certification for the following product types:

  • Doors with one or two leaves with and without a peephole
  • Glazed doors with one or two leaves, including complex configurations

These accolades confirm that our products meet the performance criteria set out by the most authoritative international green building protocols, actively contributing to the achievement of certification scores in the buildings where they are installed. A valuable choice for designers, architectural practices and main contractors involved in the construction of certified sustainable buildings.
