CE marking for fire doors: certification and compliance

The CE marking of fire doors is the fundamental requirement for placing fire-resistant and smoke-sealing products on the European market, and has been mandatory since 1 November 2019 in accordance with the harmonised standard EN 16034. Sisti Engineering has been supporting this regulatory transition through a research and development programme launched back in 2012, and now offers a comprehensive range of fully compliant solutions.

Certified quality

CE-Marked External Pedestrian, Industrial and Garage Doors

The CE marking is mandatory for external fire doors — pedestrian, industrial, commercial and garage doors — in accordance with two product standards published in the Official Journal of the European Union:

  • EN 16034: standard governing fire resistance and smoke control
  • EN 13241: industrial, commercial and garage doors
  • EN 14351 Part 1: external pedestrian doors

The CE-marked models available range from single- and double-leaf doors, with or without a peephole, to single- and double-panel sliding doors, to single- and double-leaf glazed doors – including those in complex configurations – and right through to roller blinds and roller shutters. The hinge designed specifically for the Design range has also been CE-marked.

For external pedestrian doors, in addition to the fire resistance class, the certification takes into account a number of additional performance characteristics of primary importance:

  • Sa – resistance to cold smoke
  • S200 – resistance to hot smoke
  • AAV – air permeability, water tightness and wind load resistance
  • dB – acoustic performance
  • Thermal transmittance
Type-approval

Internal pedestrian doors

Fire doors for internal use follow a different certification process. Standard EN 14351 Part 2, relating to internal pedestrian doors, has not been published in the Official Journal of the European Union: for this reason, these products cannot bear the CE marking and continue to be marketed in accordance with the Ministerial Decree of 21 June 2004, under the Italian Ministerial Type-Approval system. The available types include single- and double-leaf doors, with or without a peephole, and single- and double-panel sliding doors, for pedestrian use only.

Sustainability

LEED and WELL certifications

Sisti Engineering’s commitment extends beyond fire safety, embracing the principles of sustainable construction through LEED® and WELL Building Standard® certifications. Achieved for single- and double-leaf doors, with and without a peephole, and for glazed doors even in complex configurations, these certifications attest to the company’s focus on the well-being of occupants and on reducing the building’s environmental impact.

The LEED® standard (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) promotes sustainable building practices worldwide, such as reducing pollutant emissions, using reclaimed or recycled materials, and managing overall environmental impact. The WELL Building Standard®, introduced in 2014 by the International WELL Building Institute, focuses instead on design and construction aspects related to people’s health and wellbeing.

Quality

ISO 9001:2015 certification

Sisti Engineering’s quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015 (certificate no. SQ041804), a certification obtained in October 2004. The certification covers the entire supply chain: the design, manufacture and marketing of fire-rated doors, burglar-resistant doors and technical doors, together with maintenance services and installation management. A guarantee of excellence that has been upheld for over twenty years, confirming a rigorous approach focused on total quality.
